Kuranda Koala Gardens

The Kuranda Koala Gardens is situated in the heart of Kuranda inside the Heritage Markets. This gorgeous and intimate little wildlife park gives you the opportunity to view some of Australia's most unique wildlife up close. See koalas, wombats, crocodiles, snakes, lizards and wallabies. There are also lots of opportunities to observe the koalas doing what they do best - eating, sleeping and looking adorable. Kuranda Koala Gardens is one of only a handful of places in the world where you can actually cuddle a koala and have a souvenier photo taken, this is a real highlight for many visitors. It is also possible to pat and feed the kangaroos with the free food provided. The small size of the park makes it really intimate and the grounds family friendly - easily accessible and navigable. It's also very convenient if you have little time in Cairns and want to maximise your wildlife encounters.

Australian Butterfly Sanctuary

Located in Kuranda Village, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is home to more than 1,500 tropical butterflies that are hand reared on the premises, many indigenous to Australia. Upon entering you will be surrounded by hundreds of butterflies showing off their dazzling colours. If you hold your finger up they'll sometimes land on you for a second. Guided tours through the aviary and laboratory are conducted throughout the day, detailing a butterfly's life cycle and behaviour. A wonderful treat is viewing the caterpillars breeding nursery. Here you’ll see the caterpillars in their various stages of development and also get to see where the newly emerged butterflies “hang out” before being released into the main aviary. The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is a really pretty place to visit, the countless colourful butterflies are so beautiful to see in this green lush environment. If you're a butterfly fan, you'll love this place. Tip: Wear a brightly coloured shirt and they are more likely to come and sit on you!

Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Centre

Tjapukai is the name for the Australian Aboriginal tribe that inhabited an area that extended from Gimuy (Cairns) to Port Douglas and west following the margin of the rainforest from Tolga north to Mount Molloy. Tjapukai means "Rainforest"; Bama means People, thus the term "People of the Rainforest" is often used to describe the Tjapukai tribe. Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park enables guests to experience traditional Tjapukai culture through exhibits, theatrical performances, authentic music, dance and storytelling from the Tjapukai people. Guests can engage in interactive activities such as didgeridoo playing, face painting and boomerang throwing. The art gallery features many wonderful paintings, carvings and other items produced by local Aboriginal artists. Located within walking distance of Skyrail’s Caravonica Terminal, Tjapukai creates a dynamic interpretation of 40,000 years of culture. Full day, half day and night touring options available.

Wildlife Habitat

The Wildlife Habitat in Port Douglas was constructed in 1988 on 8 acres (2 hectares) of land that has been recreated to provide a window into our native Wildlife and natural habitat. This open and interactive environment allows guests and animals to mingle freely in a spacious and natural setting. The attraction will take you through three natural habitats (the Rainforest, the Wetlands and the Grasslands). The Rainforest Habitat leads guests through a walkway that showcases different levels of the rainforest, from the forest floor to the rainforest canopy, and the varied microenvironments encapsulated within. Native species such as the endemic Boyd’s Forest Dragon, Eclectus Parrots and the endangered Southern Cassowary can be viewed. The Wetland Habitat depicts the amazing diversity of our natural wetlands that are important fringing areas, and provides a link to many ecosystems. Visitors can wander along elevated boardwalks as birds fly and roam freely. The Grasslands open-air habitat portrays both inland and coastal plains. Here you can interact with and handfeed kangaroos and wallabies. A host of waterfowl and native birdlife use the billabong as a refuge for breeding.
There is something for all ages at the Wildlife Habitat with lots to see and do. Also highly recommended is the Breakfast with the Birds. It's a great start to a day out, enjoy a full breakfast with all the action of the birds wandering around freely amongst the tables. This is certainly a visitor must do!

Mossman Gorge Centre

The new Mossman Gorge Centre is an Indigenous eco tourism development, and the perfect option for visitors looking for an insight into the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous Australia. The centre featues a cafe, art gallery and gift shop which will give you a great introduction to the Kuku Yalanji people, the traditional owners of this land. From here you can choose to book a guided Dreamtime Walk with a local Aboriginal guide, or take the eco-friendly, low emission shuttle bus from the Mossman Gorge Centre to the heart of the Gorge.
Mossman Gorge is one of the most accessible and beautiful rainforest areas in the Far North. It lies 77km north of Cairns and 20km north of Port Douglas. To see the gorge through the eyes of a local aboriginal guide is intriuging for locals and visitors alike. Ngadiku Dreamtime Walks take visitors on a journey along private, gentle tracks, visiting special places and culturally significant sites, past traditional bark shelters and over meandering cool rainforest streams. Much of the focus is on traditional medicines, bush tucker and rainforest plant use. Indigenous stories shared are not from a book, but from a life spent living in and on the rainforest. Keep an eye out for rainforest dragons, cassowaries, musky rat kangaroos, rainforest wallabies, tree kangaroos, rainforest pythons plus fresh water turtles and fish in the impressive Mossman River.
