Mossman Gorge

Mossman Gorge is a very special part of the world held dearly by the traditional landowners of this region, the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people. The Kuku Yalanji people retain strong traditional connections to this World Heritage listed Area, with their tribe dating back some 50,000 years ago to the earliest human occupation of Australia. They are true rainforest people, whose culture is built around a deep respect for nature and an intimate knowledge of its cycles. Legends have been passed down through the generations of the Kuku Yalanji – with the members of the community having learned all they know from their elders, parents, grand parents, uncles and aunties.

Mossman Gorge is situated approx 77km north of Cairns, 20km north of Port Douglas and 2km from the township of Mossman.  Many visitors make the trip to Mossman Gorge to take in the grand beauty of the pristine rainforest, cool waters and majestic mountain ranges. The local Kuku Yalanji people welcome visitors to their traditional lands and ask that you respect their special place.

Mossman Gorge Dreamtime Walks

The Ngadiku Dreamtime Walks are a wonderful opportunity for visitors to connect with the local Rainforest Aboriginal people. Ngadiku (Nar-di-gul) means stories and legends from a long time ago, that are movingly brought to life by a 1.5hr or 2.5hr Indigenous guided walking tour of Mossman Gorge.

Conducted by the local Indigenous people, these walks will take you on a journey along private, gentle tracks, visiting special places and culturally significant sites, past traditional bark shelters and over cool rainforest streams. Hear first-hand from the Kuku Yalanji people the creation stories and history that are steeped in the roots of this ancient rainforest. Learn about eating bush tucker, using plants and animals for curing sickness and disease, traditional and contemporary ways of looking after the rainforest and the importance of this for enriching the livelihoods of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people.

This is a true cultural experience, taking you to the heart of this ancient and sacred land. The Kuku Yalanji Rainforest Aboriginal people are very proud of their indigenous heritage, and with a wealth of knowledge about its plants, animals, landscape and resources you will walk away with a richer, deeper experience of why this Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is just so special.

Mossman Gorge Gateway Centre

The Mossman Gorge Gateway Centre is a new Indigenous eco tourism development that features a contemporary café, art gallery, gift shop and tour desk. Staffed by local residents, it offers the opportunity to learn about the rich cultural heritage that links the people of the region to the land. The art gallery and shop showcase the art and design of the local Kuku Yalanji people and leading Indigenous artists from across Far North Queensland. The cafe offers a taste of culture with light snacks and refreshments, through to delicious meals that use predominantly locally sourced produce infused with Indigenous bush ingredients.

An eco shuttle bus service departs every 10 minutes transporting visitors into the heart of Mossman Gorge for a small fee. This service was developed to reduce the high amount of tourist traffic entering the gorge, and to ensure the protection of this significant landmark for future generations.

Flames of the Forest

Flames of the Forest is a dining experience like no other. Set in a private rainforest clearing just north of Port Douglas; this special dining experience is a must for anyone interested in beauty, originality, Aboriginal culture, lush rainforests and creative Australian cuisine. 'An Ancient Culture in a Timeless Spiritual Setting' takes place Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, featuring two local indigenous brothers - Gary and Robert Creek, who will share some of their remarkable culture while you dine under the stars, in a setting where they adventured as children.

"As kids we used to camp and fish in the area, I remember riding our bikes from Mossman out to Mowbray. I don't recall camping at the exact spot of Flames but an old campsite is still being used on a permanent basis today."  The area in and around Mowbray is very significant to the brothers.  "Aboriginal people use to gather around there for when all Kuku Yalanju people would go to Port Douglas for funerals, warfare, celebrations and for cultural exchange of stories adventures and weaponry".

The rainforest setting where this authentic Aboriginal dining experience takes place provides a natural backdrop for story telling, music and performance. Enjoy an evening of candlelit drama that is intimate and personal, spiritual and mystical, delectable and innovative and with stories that will resonate with you forever.

Historic Cooktown

Historic Cooktown is an area rich in Aboriginal culture, with some of the most extraordinary discoveries and interactions with local Aboriginal people occurring here. Cooktown is where Lt James Cook found safe haven in 1770 to repair his ship, the “HM Bark Endeavour”, and where the First Reconciliation took place between Europeans and the Guugu Yimithirr people.

There are many ways to learn more about Aboriginal history and culture during a visit to Cooktown. The James Cook Museum is where the story of Cook’s Landing is told from the Aboriginal perspective, and Bama tell their stories from the days of the Cape Bedford Mission to recent times. There are also some wonderful Aboriginal tools, artifacts and artworks on display. Wander around the Milbi Wall at the Wharf which tells the story of the Guugu Yimithirr people in hand-painted tiles. Local Aboriginal art and artifacts can be purchased from various outlets around town, and you might also see Aboriginal artists at the Saturday markets.

Learn about the land from its traditional custodians; Nugal-warra Elder and story-keeper Willie Gordon of Guurrbi Tours will share with you his ancestral rock art sites. Now One of Australia’s 20 Top Tours, this is a must-do whilst in Cooktown. Adventure North departs daily from Cairns to Cooktown and offers options to include Willie's rock art tour in your itinerary.

The Bama Way

The Bama Way is an Aboriginal journey from Cairns to north of Cooktown, that follows story-lines through the two Aboriginal nations of the Kuku Yalanji and Guugu Yimithirr peoples. The word ‘Bama’ (pronounced Bumma) is widely used throughout Cape York to mean an Aboriginal person, but in both Kuku Yalanji and Guugu Yimithirr the word simply means ‘person’ regardless of nationality or race.

Bama Way Aboriginal Tours links three highly acclaimed Aboriginal-owned tours that are operated by the traditional custodians of the local area. Each tour provides a unique experience which will teach you about different facets of Aboriginal culture. At Cooya Beach you can track coastal resources and throw a spear with the Kuku Yalanji brothers of the Kubirri Warra clan; at Wujal Wujal, see the Bloomfield Falls with family members of the Walker family and learn about the resources of the rainforest; and high in the hills outside Cooktown, walk amongst ancestral rock art sites with Nugal-warra Elder and story-teller, Willie Gordon of Guurrbi Tours, who explains the meanings – both practical and spiritual – behind the art, giving you an unforgettable insight into Aboriginal society and spirituality. These small group tours are personalised and give you a wonderful insight into the Aboriginal society and spirituality.

Kuku Yalanji Cultural Habitat Tours

Cooya Beach (Kuku Kuku), north of Port Douglas and Mossman, is a special place and traditional fishing ground for the Kuku Yalanji people. This unique coastal place has three diverse ecosystems - beach, mangroves and coastal reef, that are connected to each other by the ever changing mudflats and tidal lagoons. Join Kubirri Warra brothers, Linc & Brandon Walker on their beach, mudflat and mangrove walk where they will share some of their extensive knowledge on how they care for their special country.

Walk with the brothers on their traditional lands as you learn how to track and hunt for fish, mud crabs, mussels through the mangroves. Search and try bush tucker and bush medicines, and watch the brothers demonstrate different Aboriginal artifacts and their uses. Linc and Brandon Walker follow the traditions of their ancestors who, for thousands of years, educated visitors about their Kuku Yalanji culture. Today the brothers teach will their traditions to you.

Guurrbi Tours

Guurrbi Tours is a must-do for those seeking an in-depth Aboriginal cultural experience. Willie, the traditional story-keeper of the Nugal-warra clan, will take guests to his ancestral rock art sites at Wangaar-Wuri, high in the hills above Hope Vale, outside Cooktown. Here he shares the stories behind the art, and explains how the cave paintings speak of the essence of life and the lores of his people. This is a very special tour as the sacred sites are not open to the general public and cannot be visited unaccompanied.

The Great Emu Tour includes a visit to three rock art sites, including the Great Emu Cave, and provides a fascinating introduction into Aboriginal culture and spirituality, and an understanding of why this art is so important to present and future generations of Nugal-warra people. The Rainbow Serpent Tour takes you through a dramatic landscape to six rock art sites, including the Rainbow Serpent cave and an ancestral Birth Site where Willie's father and grandfather were born. You'll gain an understanding of the spiritual meanings and stories behind the paintings, and along the way learn some of the survival techniques of the Nugal-warra people - and maybe taste a green ant or two!

These magical, award-winning tours with Aboriginal Elder, Willie Gordon, are now listed as one of Australia's Ultimate Must-Do Experiences. With his great smile and infectious laugh, Willie gives you an amazing insight into Aboriginal society and will have you thinking about your own relationship with the land and how the lores of his people can apply to us all.

Aboriginal Cultural Parks

Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park celebrates the living history of the Indigenous people of the Rainforest. Brought to life by Aboriginal performers, exciting audiovisual effects and professionally choreographed shows, this genuine cultural experience is entertaining all round. Visitors will have the opportunity to take part in interactive activites such as didgeridoo playing, face painting and boomerang throwing. Discover the medicinal values of bush tucker, learn how to throw a spear, watch the hunting and ochre demonstrations and enjoy professional theatre incorporating traditional Aboriginal dance, fire making and storytelling. The Boomerang Restaurant serves morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea and the Retail Gallery has authentic Aboriginal art, boomerangs, didgeridoos and artifacts. Tjapukai is located nextdoor to the Skyrail Terminal at Caravonica, just 10 minutes from Cairns City.

Indigenous Australians are born entertainers - music and dance are an integral part of this culture used to pass on customs and traditions, and The Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience will deliver this perfectly, with a combination of performance and interactive activities at the Rainforestation Nature Park. The Pamagirri Aboriginal Dance Show takes place in the Rainforest Amphitheatre which provides a natural setting and beautiful backdrop for The Pamagirri Corroboree. This traditional dance performance depicts aspects of indigenous culture including animals, food gathering and hunting. The rainforest serves as the theatre walls whilst sounds of wildlife provide accompaniment to the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo and clapsticks. Dreamtime Walk activities include boomerang throwing, didgeridoo playing and observing spear-throwing. Rainforestation Nature Park is located just 5 minutes by car from Kuranda Village.
