Cairns Tourism News

Monday, February 14, 2011

Here are some photos taken last week at Moore Reef on the Sunlover Reef Cruises Tour.

Moore Reef is looking great after Cyclone Yasi and we are operating as per usual. Our customers are giving us positive feedback on their days out at the Great Barrier Reef!

Thursday, February 10, 2011

Poseidon is currently on annual refit and was actually out of the water on the slip in Cairns when Cyclone Yasi came through.  The disruption of cyclone Yasi has caused major delays to the work needed to be undertaken due to loss of power for a week and parts and materials not being able to be delivered by road from Southern Suppliers.  Therefore our Refit has now been extended and we hope to be back in operation by MONDAY 21st FEBRUARY 2011.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the delay and we look forward to getting back out to the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs as soon as possible.

Thank you.

From the Poseidon Team

Kewarra Beach Resort & Spa is now back in full operation with resort guests in house as of last Friday. Our stunning new "Paperbark" restaurant bar and lounge and our new "Day Spa" along with all other guest services and facilities are all back in full operation.

Thursday, February 10, 2011

The half day white water rafting with Raging Thunder is on the Barron River and includes approximately 2 hours of White Water Rafting

Cairns is lucky enough to have the Barron River located just 30 minutes away. The rapids on the Barron River are of grade 2-3 which means they are simple technical rapids with a need to maneuver the raft, which results in great rafting for first timers.

Barron River Rafting - anticipated commencement of operations on Friday 11th February

Tuesday, February 08, 2011

Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa and it's lush rainforest valley, sustained no physical damage during Cyclone Yasi, however due to prolonged loss of electricity and services the Lodge & Spa is now not able to be open for business.

The electricity supply company has not confirmed when the supply will be restored as they are dealing with larger populated areas and essential services as first priorities.

We believe we will be fully operational again during the month of February.

Once power has been restored and all essential onsite infrastructure is fully operational, management and staff will contact you with the announcement that Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa is re-opened.

As our office is now operating remotely, we encourage you to continue to make contact with us for all enquiries and advance bookings, as ultimately we want to be able to provide our unique experiences for your clients as soon as possible.

We are sure you appreciate our unfortunate situation as a small Australian owned and operated business and we sincerely thank you for your patience and your support.

Monday, February 07, 2011

Hello All,

Southern Cross Atrium Apartments is fully operational. We didn't lose power at all so no loss of phones. We have a large contingent of Emergency Police in house but operations are all back to normal.

Monday, February 07, 2011

Please be advised that Reef Experience is going to have some minor work done in the next couple of days and  will be available from Thursday 10th February 2011

Thank you for your support and have a wonderful day

Monday, February 07, 2011

Everything is fine at The Hotel Cairns. The Hotel Cairns was not affected by Cyclone Yasi and is fully operational.

Monday, February 07, 2011

We are very pleased to advise that  Paradise Palms Resort and Country Club is fully operational with no structural damage with power restored and the area is looking beautiful. We were very lucky to come through Yasi and happy to advise that all guests and staff are all safe and sound.

About 20 staff and a large handful of golf members worked for two days on a working bee to clean up debris from the golf course and its now back in its former condition and beauty.

Our telephone lines and the internet is now working and thank you for your patience, understanding along with kind wishes while lines and internet were down last week.

Authorities have declared the Cairns Domestic and International Airport to be fully operational and we are more than ready to welcome guests. While there are areas of Queensland that were devastated, the major tourist towns such as Cairns, Palm Cove and Port Douglas were spared the full force of Cyclone Yasi and business is back to normal.

Monday, February 07, 2011

Paradise on the beach suffered no damage in Cyclone Yasi, we are up and running again with guests in house who are loving the peace and beauty of Palm Cove. Though there is still a bit of tidying up to do on the streets all businesses have re-opened.

A big thank you to all former guests in "Paradise" who have rung or emailed checking on our welfare.

Monday, February 07, 2011

Good Afternoon everyone,
Well as we are all very well aware Mother Nature has been playing havoc with most of Australia this summer and unfortunately Cyclone Yasi that hit our coast last week did not spare Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park.

We have sustained considerable damage to our Dance Theatre, Cultural Village, Restaurant and the electrics within parts of the main building.

We therefore have to remain closed for both Tjapukai by Day and Tjapukai by Night until Tuesday, 15th February 2010, reopening both products on Wednesday, 16th February.

We will provide you with an update of our status on Monday, 14th February.

We do sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that this has caused, but please be assured that we have not made this decision to remain closed lightly. We do not want to put any of our staff or customers at risk until we are 100% sure that the entire park and the experiences that we are offering are safe and of a high standard.

Monday, February 07, 2011

Tully River Rafting & Xtreme Rafting - anticipated commencement of operations on Wednesday 9th February

Monday, February 07, 2011

Fitzroy Island Ferries - operating as usual.
Spend the day on Fitzroy Island exploring one of the Great Barrier Reef's most unspoilt islands. The Raging Thunder Sea Kayak tour will take you to parts of the island not accessible by foot.

Saturday, February 05, 2011

Hello everyone at Travstar,

Hope you are all okay & back up & running again.

Just to let you know everything is 100% back to normal at Sea Change. Our pool has been cleaned, the debris removed, the building hosed down, and we look great.

We just need some guests !! Our power is on - we were lucky that we never even lost power.

Kind Regards,

Simon Batt
Manager

Reef Encounter sustained some damage due to a loose game fishing boat which we are in the process of fixing. We will let you know as soon as we are ready to go again. At this stage we should be ready in a week or so.

Saturday, February 05, 2011

Harbour Lights Luxury Apartments have not been affected at all and did not even lose power. We are ready for guests and apartments with spectacular views of the marina.

Saturday, February 05, 2011

Fitzroy Island Resort is back up and running after recent Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi passed through the Far North.
The Resort team lead by resort owner; Doug Gamble remained on the Island throughout the storm and has quickly cleared away fallen trees and debris left by high winds.

Power supply, water, phones and communication remained fully functional throughout the storm.

The resort sustained minimal damage with only gardens and some shoreline areas being affected. The Island team have been able to get everything up and running very quickly.

The Jetty, esplanade and beaches are now fully accessible with the Resort and all accommodation now back to full service. Late yesterday the final clearing of trees and debris on the National Park tracks was completed. The lighthouse and Nudey Beach access tracks are now fully open.
Newly opened Beach Bar  “Foxys” was serving cold beer last night for the hard working team on the island.

Ferry services to the island are back to normal with 60 guests arriving today for the weekend.

This Saturday’s Flood Appeal Concert featuring ARIA band “Mental As Anything” has had to be postponed and will be set for another date soon.

Saturday, February 05, 2011

As you may know, Tropical Cyclone Yasi recently hit the coast of Queensland.

We are currently undertaking a situation analysis to determine the extent of damage to the properties and assess for how long they will have to be closed.

Based on our preliminary assessment, we have unfortunately decided to cancel all, and accept no further, bookings for stays up to and including 31 August 2011. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this will inevitably cause.

We appreciate your understanding in this regard and hope to be in touch soon with more positive news.

Deleware North, owners of Lizard Island & Heron Island, have kindly offered to try and accommodate all guests on their resorts.

Saturday, February 05, 2011

The Port Douglas region and the Great Barrier Reef are as beautiful as ever & the Quicksilver wavepiercer is operating as per normal.

Saturday, February 05, 2011

Daintree Walkabout should will up and running by Wed the 9th Feb. We are taking bookings now.

Daintree Walkabout Tour takes you through ancient rainforests and back to the Dreamtime with the local Kuku Yalanji tribe. Dine at Silky Oaks Lodge, then cruise the Daintree River and spot a crocodile, enjoy tropical fruit tastings and spend time in the historical town of Port Douglas.

Saturday, February 05, 2011

Northern Delights is also now running as Hartleys has informed us they are back up and running. If the tour is unable to run due to not meeting minimum numbers we will upgrade passengers free of charge to the Tour 3, Cape Tribulation and Daintree Tour.

Saturday, February 05, 2011

Due to the tropical cyclone alert Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park will be closed on Wednesday 2nd February or Thursday 3rd February until further notice.

Saturday, February 05, 2011

Following up to our earlier e-mail of today, we are writing to confirm that Wavedancer Port Douglas is operating as per normal from today, Saturday 5th.

Low Isles offers everything you can dream of in a tropical island paradise. From the moment your luxury catamaran moors in the calm waters of the island's picturesque lagoon, a host of reef activities await you.

Saturday, February 05, 2011

It is wonderful to announce that Ocean Spirit Cruises has suffered no damage during the crossing of Cyclone Yasi. We are fully operational with the Michaelmas Cay cruise operating as of today 5th February and the Dinner Cruise operating this evening. Our hearts go out to our fellow Queenslanders who have not been so lucky.

Friday, February 04, 2011

Following up to our earlier e-mail of today, we are writing to confirm that Great Adventures Outer Barrier Reef and Green Island products will be operating as per normal from tomorrow, Saturday 5th. With this confirmation, we can now confirm that All Quicksilver group products are operating as per normal.

Best Wishes, Quicksilver Group

Friday, February 04, 2011

On behalf of the team here at Sunlover Reef Cruises we are pleased to announce that we will back in full operation this Sunday February 6th 2011.

Friday, February 04, 2011

We are pleased to announce that Tropical Horizons Tours is re-establishing operations. We put in place steps to protect the vehicle stock and the office and both were protected. We seem to have been fortunate to come out of this event ok. Our concern goes to those that have endured major damage and hope that they are able to return to business operations as soon as possible.

We are sorry there were not able to offer touring operations today (Friday February 4th) as there were too many issues with roads and also with the operators that we visit on tour. From tomorrow Saturday February 5th we will be operating our Cape Tribulation tour (i.e. Tour 3). The road to Cape Tribulation is being cleared today for effective full access so we will operate this tour.

Kuranda tours will commence in part operations also tomorrow. Skyrail have confirmed they will be running as normal, KSR have announced that they will not be resuming the train until at least Monday February 7th.  Our tour 1 Kuranda and Atherton Tablelands will also be operational for coach and Skyrail

Tour 5 Waterfalls and Tour 9 Misty Mountains are still problematic. The Gillies Range is currently closed until further notice and power outage is affecting all the operators we visit on these tours. We will advise shortly the resumption date for these tours.

I summary we are hopeful your respective business resumes quickly to normal operations.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Friday, February 04, 2011

I'm delighted to say that with just a few trees down around the property, Jungle Surfing's platform trees, support trees and structures were unaffected by Cyclone Yasi.  As I write, we are raising the cables and envisage being fully operational by the end of today, Friday 4th February.

Thursday, February 03, 2011

Tropical Cyclone Yasi had the world spellbound and watching the supreme power of nature!

It is a wonderful to be announcing that Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa did not suffer any damage. With power expected to be back on soon (perhaps as early as tomorrow) it is business as usual.

Our hearts go out to all fellow Queenslanders who were not so lucky.

So, the emotions of great relief and thankfulness are certinaly high in our circle of friends, family, work mates and all people connected to our families and the Lodge.

The unique location of the Lodge, nestling  into its very special rainforest valley has proved again to be an incredibly safe haven. The valley adorned with ancient plants (some pre-Jurassic and Triassic eras), an abundance of birds and wildife (some rare and endangered) has weathered many facets of nature over millions of years.

The relief this morning and the overwhelming number of caring messages, social networking messages and sentiments of well wishes from literally all around the globe has everyone assoicated with the Lodge feeling very humbled and lucky.

Thank you from Terry, Cathy, family and team
