Dengue Fever

Updated: 25-Jan-2009

In Australia, dengue only occurs in north Queensland. Dengue is not endemic (ie. naturally occurring in north Queensland). The dengue mosquito is common in north Queensland and outbreaks can occur when the virus is transmitted to the local mosquito population in north Queensland by infected international travellers or residents returning home from overseas.

The only precaution visitors need to take is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. In particular, visitors should:

  • wear insect repellent, particularly during the day when the dengue mosquito is most active
  • wear long, loose, light-coloured clothing
  • use flying insect spray to kill any mosquitoes in rooms
  • use mosquito coils or plug-in insecticide mats in rooms.

The dengue virus can be easily introduced by dengue-infected visitors to north Queensland from countries where dengue fever occurs.

Since dengue fever mosquitoes breed in urban environments, the usual tourist activities in north Queensland such as reef and rainforest trips carry a low risk. The risk can be further minimised by staying in screened or air-conditioned accommodation.

Key Facts for visitors to Cairns:-

  • There are no dengue mosquitoes on the Great Barrier Reef or in the Daintree Rainforest – the major tourist destinations of Tropical North Queensland.  However Cairns has seen an increase cases of dengue fever this green season.
  • Dengue fever incubates in stagnant water in suburban backyards in low-lying residential areas of Cairns that are well away from the CBD, hotels, restaurants and other main tourist spots.
  • The defense against mosquito bites is insect repellant.
  • In the highly unlikely event that a tourist should contract dengue fever, Cairns Base Hospital is a first-class medical facility staffed by experts in dengue treatment.
