Diving & Snorkelling:
The fringing reef surrounding Orpheus is one of the Great Barrier Reef's most spectacular and diverse marine wonderlands. Orpheus' principal dive sites are home to 1,100 of the 1,500 species of fish on the reef, 340 of the 359 varieties of hard corals and one of the region's largest collections of soft corals.
In this natural aquarium, dive and snorkel amongst a myriad of world-class reef habitats, submerged indigenous sites, recent plane wrecks and, if you're lucky spot green turtles, manta rays, bull rays, reef sharks and humpback whales.
- Manta Ray season - early August to early November
- Humpback whale migration - mid-late August to late October
- Annual coral spawning - expected dual spawn predicted between 15th - 18th November
The Great Barrier Reef is a fisherman’s playground and the waters surrounding Orpheus provide some of the most sought after reef and game fishing species in the world. An excellent array of table fish including Coral Trout, Sweetlip, Red Emperor and Giant Trevally can be caught locally. For the avid anglers, a trip to the outer reef is where the famous pelagic species such as the Black Marlin, Dog Tooth Tuna, Spanish Mackerel and Wahoo breed.
Following your fishing expedition, go ashore to a secluded cove where your daily catch can be grilled on an open fire whilst you enjoy an ice-cold beer or wine with your fellow fisherman. Alternatively, have your catch prepared to your liking by the Executive Chef and served for dinner back at the lodge.
Take the helm of your motorised dinghy and discover the many pristine bays and reefs that fringe Orpheus. With more private beaches than guests, beach comb and enjoy a chef-prepared picnic hamper in absolute seclusion! After lunch, snorkel straight off the beach into blue-green waters and discover the mystical coral gardens and tropical fish of this underwater world.
